Description
The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of the most widely distributed species of eagle and can generally be found around the more temperate areas of Northern Europe, America, and Asia. Unfortunately there is a decline in populations in both America and Europe, mainly due to destruction of habitat and hunting.
Golden Eagles have a wingspan of between 180 – 220cm and can weigh up to 5kg, the female is generally larger than the male. They are monogamous and remain together for many years, possibly for life and often have several eyries (nests) within the large hunting territories they maintain. Eggs are laid in late winter or early spring and hatch after45 -50 days, it is common for only one chick to survive to leave the nest.
A colored pencil drawing of the head of a majestic Golden Eagle. I have added this without borders for those who prefer to choose their own.
The Golden Eagle has been used in falconry for hundreds of years, once even used to hunt and kill grey wolves (Canis lupus) in some native communities. Golden Eagles have a wide diet, feeding off carrion, hares, rabbits, ground squirrels and birds such as ptarmigan and grouse depending on location.
